Brussels fines BA £90m over cargo cartel

The European Commission found BA, Air France-KLM and nine other airlines guilty of fixing air freight prices over six years, after Germany's Lufthansa blew the whistle on the illegal arrangement.

India-flagged cargo ship adrift in North Pacific

Washington, Dec 21 : The US Coast Guard has mounted emergency efforts to rescue 28 crew members of an India-flagged 740-ft bulk APJ Suryavir as it Monday drifted about 540 miles southwest of Alaska's Adak Island.

A Coast Guard C-130 overflew the crippled cargo freighter as 20-30 ft waves and winds reaching as high as 50 mph tossed it about in the stormy

We also know that al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a terrorist group based in Yemen, continues to plan attacks against our homeland, our citizens, and our friends and allies."

Philippine Embassy in London

Iraq has proposed to sweeten the terms of the service contract it is offering to international oil firms to boost output at its biggest producing oilfields.
The following lists some of the changes in the 20-year contracts proposed during a three-day workshop Iraqi officials hosted for oil firms in Istanbul that ended on Saturday.
BIDDING
There will be three items for oil firms to bid:
- A short-term improved production target at the oilfield to be reached 18 months after the contract takes effect.

- A long-term enhanced production target at the field to be reached six years after the contract takes effect. The enhanced target must be maintained for a minimum of seven years.
- The cost per barrel of reaching the enhanced production.
Initially, the bidding parameters were:
- A maintenance fee in cost per barrel for maintaining oilfield production at current levels.
- A fee in cost per barrel for increasing output to a set level.
- A fee in cost per barrel for reaching an enhanced output target within seven years and maintaining it.
DECLINE
- Iraq will write into the contract a five percent decline rate in production rates from the oilfields, which will kick in after the improved production target is reached.
- There was no decline rate in the initial baseline contract, a cause of concern for oil firms as some of the fields were old and were expected to go into decline over the course of the contracts.
- This was one of the most important changes for oil companies as they will receive payment only from output above the baseline rate. If they fail to pump above the baseline, in theory they will not get paid. Lowering the baseline should ensure there is enough output to pay.

What are currency pairs?

In the foreign exchange market, currency is traded in pairs. Pairs have meaning in relation to each other so must always stay together. The two currencies in a pair are traded one against the other. The rate at which they are traded is called the exchange rate. The exchange rate is affected by currency supply and demand.

Most common currencies

The most common currencies traded in the market are called ‘majors’. Most currencies are traded against the United States dollar (USD). USD is traded more than any other currency. The five currencies most traded next are: the euro (EUR); the Japanese yen (JPY); the British pound sterling (GBP); the Swiss franc (CHF), and the Australian dollar (AUD). Trades of the six major currencies total 90% of the market. The most common currency pair is EUR/USD.

The exchange rate

The exchange rate is always changing. The value of one currency is determined by market supply and demand forces, by comparing it to another currency. In a currency pair, the first currency is called the ‘base currency’; the second currency is called the ‘quote currency’ or ‘counter currency’. When you buy a currency pair, you buy the base currency and sell the quote currency. The exchange rate tells buyers how much of the quote currency they need to buy one of the base currency. The order in a pair always stays the same, being a common approach by the industry. USD/JPY, for example, is a pair (USD = base, JPY = the quote). The order within the pair, in the way you use the term, does not change. So you either BUY it or SELL it, depending on the direction of the trade. For example: USD/JPY – you either BUY JPY using USD or you Sell JPY to get USD. Here is an example: EUR/USD 1.2500 means you need 1.25USD to buy one euro. It also means if you sell one euro you get 1.25USD. All trades involve buying one currency and selling another currency at the same time. If in the next day the Euro is rising against the USD and the exchange rate is now 1.26, for every 1 Euro that you bought, you have earned 1USD cent. Or, if you traded the opposite direction, for every EUR that you sold (at 1.25) you lost 1USD cent (since you “buy” back the EUR for 1.26).

Buy and sell currency

Traders in the foreign exchange market buy and sell currency to try to make profit. There are two prices for currency: the buy price, called the ‘BID’; and the sell price, called the ‘ASK’. The difference between the ‘bid’ and the ‘ask’ is called the ‘spread’. The spread represents the difference between what the market maker gives to buy from a trader, and what the market maker takes to sell to a trader.

UK Government matched giving

The University of Cambridge and its Colleges welcome the UK Government’s matched funding scheme to encourage philanthropic donations to English universities. Oxford and Cambridge have agreed with the Government that they will use the scheme to encourage greater participation by alumni and other supporters in their respective institution-wide fundraising campaigns. The Government has set a cap of £2.75 million on the availability of matched funds for Cambridge in aggregate over the three years 2008/9 - 2010/11. In order to achieve this goal the Colleges and the University will have to demonstrate that they have received in cash at least £8.25 million (including gift aid) from ‘new donors’ over the three year period. All donations received from ‘new donors’ are eligible (i.e: donors who have not made a gift to a specific College or to the University in the three years before the start of the scheme), be they individuals, companies, trusts or foundations in the UK or overseas.
